Reminder of where we are in the story:
Danny is understandably scarred by the events in the previous book. He is still haunted by some of the people from The Overlook, but Dick Halloran teaches him how to take them and store them into sealed boxes in his mind. Throughout the years, though, Dan finds that one of the only ways he can cope with the shine is to drink, and he becomes an alcoholic. During one of his lowest points he goes home with a woman, steals money from her and then witnesses her son come out with a sagging diaper and going for the cocaine they had used the night before. This episode with the mother and her son continues to haunt Dan throughout the years and he cannot get past it.
Dan ends up traveling to New Hampshire and gets a job there. For some reason his shine has come back in full force when he gets there, but he ends up settling down and working hard to sober up. Over the years he starts attending AA meetings, is very involved with his sponsor and gets a job at a hospital. At the hospital he is called "Doctor Sleep", and helps dying patients cross over.
The True Knot are shown travelling the country, preying on young people with psychic abilities. Somehow they harvest this power and use it to stay young and cheat death. Over the years they have been finding less and less children with powers for them to harvest, which is causing them to worry. They had never been sick before, but now they have started developing colds and seem to be having a harder time staving off the aging.
Abra is a little girl born with very strong psychic abilities (to put it mildly). Her parents try very hard to understand what is going on with Abra's powers and try not to make her feel different. Abra starts talking to Dan through a chalkboard at the hospital, and then ends up talking to Tony, Dan's childhood "imaginary friend".
The True Knot finds a young boy, tortures then kills him for his power. Abra "saw" this happen and the True Knot sensed her. They were able to tell that she has the most power that they've known of for a long time. They vow that they will find her after she's been given a few years to grow even more in her powers.
Ideas for discussion:
1) What do you think of the book so far? Is it measuring up to your expectations for the sequel to The Shining?
2) Do you think Danny's reactions to his life with the shine is realistic? What do you think about how he's worked to deal with it all towards the end of this section?
3) Why do you think Danny is haunted by the mother and her little boy that he encounters towards the beginning of the book?
4) What do you think of the True Knot?
