Reminder of where we are in the story:
Neverfell attends the Banquet with the Childersins. She spines some Wine on purpose in order to protect a servant who spilled a drop of Wine on the tablecloth and is whisked away with the rest of the family while Maxim is taken to be questioned and possibly executed. The family schemes about how they can fall into favor with someone else with Maxim dead and decide to sell off Zouelle, since they blame the disaster on her.

Zouelle is rescued by Neverfell. They run into Erstwhile who tells Neverfell that she needs to stop trusting everyone so easily, and that even he has lied to her. Neverfell turns herself in to the Grand Steward in order to save Maxim, and succeeds.

The Grand Steward's left eye likes Neverfell, but right eye has not yet been convinced. Neverfell is employed as a taste tester. She goes on a stroll and learns that Madame Appeline had, 7 years ago, been buying dresses for a child. Neverfell suspects that Madame Appeline may be a relation of hers, perhaps even her mother.

A scheme is hatched to try to capture the Kleptomancer, challenging him to capture the Grand Steward's latest and greatest curiousity. They mean for him to have tried to capture a stuffed animal, but instead he captures Neverfell. Luckily for Neverfell, he captures her in the middle of an attempt on her life and rescues her from the assassin.

The Kleptomancer tells Neverfell of his plans and then informs her that because she cannot keep a secret, he will also be giving her a Wine in order to cause her to forget everything she has seen there before returning her to the Grand Steward.

Ideas for discussion:
1) What do you think the connection is between Neverfell and Madame Appeline? Do you think it is as innocent as she believes?

2) Do you think Neverfell will ever smarten up and learn she can't trust everyone, even Zouelle? Or do you think that Zouelle will eventually turn around her character?

3) Any predictions as to who is trying to assassinate Neverfell?

4) Anything else you want to say about this section of the book?

1) I wonder if Madame Appeline hasn't stolen Neverfell from someone. I don't believe for a second that she is actually a good person.

2) I keep hoping Zouelle might actually have a good bone in her but I'm pretty sure she doesn't! I do think Neverfell might eventually learn, but probably too slowly to keep herself from being hurt.

4) I LOVE all the stuff about the cartographers being a little bit mad. The bit where they were speaking to one and then shoved him out of the room after he had been speaking for exactly 5 minutes was brilliant.
1) I don't think they're related, but maybe Appeline swiped her from the surface. I'm suspicious of everyone - the book's pretty clear you can't trust anyone!

2) Haha, no. Oddly, this hasn't annoyed me yet. Generally when characters are this stupid I end up hating the book, but I find Neverfell kind of charming despite this.

3)Appeline! But honestly I don't know. I figure Appeline or someone we haven't met yet.

4)I find this book so charming! I just love the world building. All the things everything can do, plus the Kleptomancer's story about Caverna.
Totally agree that the book is charming! I love Neverfell even if she is naive as hell, and the world is so interesting. I'm excited every time we get to learn a little bit more about it.

Also loved the Kleptomancer's story about Caverna and how all the cartographers are in love with her :)
1) I WANT to believe that Appeline is a good person and Neverfell's long lost mother, buuuuut yeah probably not. ;p Really have no clue what the connection might be, this book has been very good at shaking things up and going in a completely different direction from what I expect.

2) Zouelle's a tough one, she has never been exposed to real friendship in her entire life and comes across as a sympathetic character. If I had to guess, I'd say she will probably foul up with Neverfell somehow, but then turn around after realizing what she's done and that she cares for Neverfell.

I really really really hope Neverfell doesn't get too jaded, she's such a sweetie!

3) Appeline probably, it's the most devastating option.

4) I love this book!!
Totally agree that the book is constantly going in a direction different from the one I expected. She's already been in so many different situations and locations! I thought she would be with the Childersins for a while and was not expecting the move to the palace or to the Kleptomancer's lair. (Well, I guess I expected the lair but only after the challenge was issued :P)

I'm really enjoying this book too. I guess I feel like there's this sense of wonder while reading it that I don't experience very often :)
1) What do you think the connection is between Neverfell and Madame Appeline? Do you think it is as innocent as she believes?

I think Madame Appeline definitely knows something, but it seems too obvious for her to be her mother.

2) Do you think Neverfell will ever smarten up and learn she can't trust everyone, even Zouelle? Or do you think that Zouelle will eventually turn around her character?
I think Neverfell will continue to be trusting in everyone, however she will do something "randomly" that will allow her to escape from a character who is potentially going to do her harm. At least that's what it seems.

3) Any predictions as to who is trying to assassinate Neverfell?
Hmm.. I wonder if its Madame Appeline? Especially since everyone speaks of how you can't "trust" her. Or maybe that's what the book wants us to think - LOL

4) Anything else you want to say about this section of the book?
It's definitely faster paced than the last section we read. The kidnapper thing though was definitely a dark change of pace.

1) I'm still not sure. I suspect Appeline maybe planted Neverfell to do something, but I have no idea what yet.

2) I'm beginning to think Zouelle might be okay, but again, I'm not sure of anything in this book yet. I do actually really like her tentative friendship with Neverfell. Like you can almost see her reaching out for that touch of human kindness and connection that she doesn't get from her own family. I also loved her thought, something about how being around Neverfell at full blast was like being drowned in exclamation points? It was cute.

3) I honestly can't think of who would be trying to assassinate Neverfell at this point. I suspect it's either Appeline, or there's someone we haven't met yet who has yet to show him or her self.

4) I really like the Kleptomancer for some reason. I loved his stories about the cartographers and Caverna.
The quote about the exclamation points was so great!

In general I loved that you could never be sure of anything in this book. Having Neverfell be our main way of being introduced to the world meant we were just as in the dark as Neverfell was, even if we're a lot less naive.
