Reminder of where we are in the story:
Cinder returns home to Adri and Pearl while waiting for her money to come in from the research and forming her escape plan. She decides to use her new money to start fixing the old gasoline car she found in the junkyard the night Peony fell ill, and figures that it should be fixed right around the night of the ball.

Kai's father dies from the disease and the lunar queen announces she's coming to earth to discuss peace options.

Cinder returns to the palace to visit Dr. Erland for more tests. While there she runs into the prince, who asks her to the dance. Cinder is shaken and refuses, worried about what will happen when he learns she is a cyborg. After he leaves, the doctor tells Cinder that he learned from her samples that she is Lunar and the id chip implanted in her is not her own.

Cinder fixes Kai's android. She finds out that the thing that was breaking the android was a comm chip - one that Kai says he didn't install and that was transmitting information about the lunar princess to an unknown source. While delivering the android back to the palace, the queen spots her and is able to sense that Cinder is lunar when she fights off the glamour.

Queen Levana reveals to Kai that the lunar scientists have discovered an antidote to letumosis, and offers to deliver her antidote to the people of earth if Kai agrees to marry her.

Dr. Erland gives Cinder some of the antidote to give to Peony while Kai is in a meeting with the other leaders of Earth. One of the leaders reveals these images he has found from the moon, training a mutant army. Kai recognizes this for the show of power that it is - the queen wanting to show him that if he doesn't go along with her wishes, she can easily crush them with her army.

1) What are you thinking of the story and the characters?

Honestly? I love the characters so far, even the asshat ones. They are well constructed and their personalities shine, to me.

2) What do you think of the Lunar Queen?

She's a bitch on wheels. She's making good use of strategy by visiting while Kai is emotionally distraught, but, at the same time, she's so cold and callous to the grief that he's going through.

3) Were you surprised when the Dr. revealed that he was lunar as well?

Honestly? I was. I didn't see that one coming, though there were a couple hints dropped earlier on.

4) What do you think of the what Cinder witnessed with id chips being taken off of the dead?

Though economically intelligent, it's a disgusting practice. It's like removing teeth and fingerprints in our day and age. Everything that that person is, is in that ID chip. With them being removed, all of a sudden the tragic victims are nothing more than nameless husks of meat and bone. At the very least, the bots would have some sort of identifying mark on the bodies, so that the deceased's respective relatives could properly mourn.

5) Thoughts on what we've learned about Cinder's past so far?

I think it's a terribly interesting past that has been shown, thus far... and I totally called it. It's the only way that that much of a spotlight that has been shone on her makes sense.
1) I enjoy Cinder's character, and the Doctor as well. I'm a little disappointed at how black and white the others feel.

2) Speaking of black and white. There's not a single good thing about her. She's just a megalomaniac and I find her less interesting for that. Give me an antagonist with good motivation please.

3) A little bit, thought it felt clear there was something a little unusual about him.

4) It just felt sad. That's the only monument to their death they get, a quick surgical chip removal and then boom, forgotten. It's a bit awful to think about.
1) What are you thinking of the story and the characters?
The book definitely kept me interested, I could not put it down. I just wish that some of the characters weren't so transparent, and that the plot wasn't so obvious.

2) What do you think of the Lunar Queen?
I am not really a fan of one dimensional baddies, and the queen is as one-dimensionally evil as you can get. I obviously didn't like her, as I am sure the author intended, but my dislike of her really had to do with the fact that she was so transparent (and not because she was so evil, she was too evil to be believable).

3) Were you surprised when the Dr. revealed that he was lunar as well?
I had put the pieces together already, so no :x

4) What do you think of the what Cinder witnessed with id chips being taken off of the dead?
I felt as though it was probably something sinister, but couldn't come up with a reason. You would think they would want to destroy anything that had been contaminated by an infected. Maybe the chips are recording any sort of resistance that a person might have formed, and is engineered to ensure the disease overcomes any resistance.

5) Thoughts on what we've learned about Cinder's past so far?
She's the princess, blah-de-blah.
1) I am actually really loving this book. In spite of the transparency and the mostly one dimensional characters... something is pulling me in. I hit the stopping points and I am like... but but but... can't I read more? Please?

2) As others have said, completely one dimensional evil. She isn't the evil you love to hate, she isn't even the evil, but you can understand why. She is just hackles-raising, very overdone evil. She kind of reminds me of Professor Umbridge in the Harry Potter books. Completely different characters, Umbridge had motivation, was arguably much better written, etc. But they both make me almost feel physically sick when I read about them.

3) Actually yes, though now that we know he is, I think he has been looking for a female cyborg of a certain age to see if they are the *gasp* LOST LUNAR PRINCESS!

4) I actually thought it was very strange and a little inconsistent with the story. The letumosis quarantine is run by the government (or so I thought) and there is some sort of treaty against harboring Lunars on Earth. So why would anyone in a government-run facility sanction such a large scale non-conformance with the rules. Arguments can be made that no one ever goes into the letumosis quarantine, but I honestly think it was just a plot hole overlooked by the author.

That aside, I am of two minds of the actual practise of it. It is kind of akin to donating your organs when you die. Some people want to, and some people don't. This isn't a willing donation scenario, but the way I think of it is that I don't need it wherever I am going, and it might be able to help someone else.

5) I was totally right about the "security system"! I promise I didn't read that, I got to the part like, 3 pages into the next section where they were talking about the Lunar glamor with relation to the queen and I was like... hmmm.

I had other thoughts but they kind of escaped while I was writing all that. So I will (maybe) post them later.

Edit: I found one! So, does anyone else find it strange that in this age of space ships and stuff, the people of earth don't have bio-hazard suits?

And another one! Did we ever really get a description of what Cinder looks like? Or any of the characters really? (Besides Queen Levanna) I find the book to be pretty sparse on descriptive prose, and I am not sure how that makes me feel...

1. I think the characters are great. Even the evil ones are classically evil. It's like reading a Disney movie. I enjoyed it so much I had couldn't wait until next week to finish the book. My favorite character is Iko. I would love to have a companion/android like her.

2. She is deviously evil. I really want to see what she looks like without the glamor. I love all the veiled threats if Prince Kai doesn't marry her.

3. It really wasn't a shock because of the hints given in the book.

4. That was something that didn't make sense. The act of harvesting the IDs were just like stealing someone's ID I understand. But who is behind it? The med androids don't seem smart enough or to have the need to take ID chips so who is doing it? Is it the government or is someone illegally programming the androids to do it? I wish that would have been clarified.
1) What are you thinking of the story and the characters?
I love the story, and think the characters are pretty well-written. Cinder and Iko are probably my favorites, and I like reading their interactions with each other.

2) What do you think of the Lunar Queen?
I think that she fills the evil-doer role quite well. I also kind of like that the rumors about her being evil and vicious are true, and she really does seem to be just evil for the sake of evil, instead of some deeper meaning behind her actions, which I find to be kind of tiring in stories sometimes.

3) Were you surprised when the Dr. revealed that he was lunar as well?
Yes, I was surprised. I didn't really see it coming, and it makes me wonder what his larger role in the story will be, and how his being lunar will tie in.

4) What do you think of the what Cinder witnessed with id chips being taken off of the dead?
I don't know. I had originally wondered if this wasn't a programming that had secretly been done by the lunar queen's thaumaturge to help sneak lunars into the country to revolt against the emperor, or something like that, but that doesn't quite make sense either.

5) Thoughts on what we've learned about Cinder's past so far?
It's interesting, and I think it's leading up to her being the princess (why else would she have gotten all that fancy hardware).
1) I actually finished the book before I remembered to come back and comment, but I really enjoyed the story. Kai, the doctor, and Cinder were all pretty great. Also loved Peony.

2) Agree with everyone else on how one-dimensional she is. I am not sure if this was inspiration taken from like... Disney villains or something since most of them just seem evil for the sake of being evil? But I think it would have helped to develop her some more. Maybe she will get some additional development eventually.

3) I called it the second he walked into the holding room to visit Cinder after she was sent there by her mother. The author had already mentioned the lunar glamour powers and stuff, and once he walked in the room and Cinder's little orange lie light went off, I knew he had to be lunar :x

4) I don't care if the virus can't live long outside the human body, there is no way I'd want an id chip from a letumosis victim in my arm... omg. It seems so unsanitary XD;; but I guess with what Dr. Erland suggested with Lunar fugitives, it seems like it would be either using a dead person's chip or being killed on the moon.

What does confuse me though is, if that's a black market practice, who ordered the androids to remove the chips in the first place? That seems really weird, and I'm confused as to that being a seemingly common practice. Also, as the doctor pointed out, there is certainly not a flood of these chips on the market so... what?

5) My opinion was very much still the same as the first section - if she isn't the missing/dead lunar princess, I will eat the book.
Sorry for late comment - was away for a few days.

1) What are you thinking of the story and the characters?
A little dull and cliche in parts, but ultimately an easy, quick read still.

2) What do you think of the Lunar Queen?
Would be good to see her reasons and depth. She's just the 'baddie' without reason other than to fill a space in the book.

3) Were you surprised when the Dr. revealed that he was lunar as well?
Nope. Had to be something to him, I suppose.

4) What do you think of the what Cinder witnessed with ID chips being taken off of the dead?
Thought it was a little odd, and just have to hope it's explained a bit better later on.

5) Thoughts on what we've learned about Cinder's past so far?
More clicheness, but it's managed to not be in an annoying way so far.
1) What are you thinking of the story and the characters?

I really enjoy the story and I like most of the characters. I LOVE IKO. MORE IKO PLEASE. She is my favorite. Also I can't help but think of all the androids and little R2D2s, regardless of how the book describes them.

2) What do you think of the Lunar Queen?

I kinda wish there were a little more to this than SHE IS EVIL AND WANTS TO CONTROL EVERYONE AND HATES ANYONE WHO MIGHT BE MORE BEAUTIFUL THAN HER, all Snow White-esque. I'm not sure that there will be more to her than that, but we'll see. It would be nice for her to not be such a 2D, obvious villain.

3) Were you surprised when the Dr. revealed that he was lunar as well?

A little bit. Not 100% surprised, but. XD

4) What do you think of the what Cinder witnessed with id chips being taken off of the dead?

I thought this was kinda creepy. I'm sure it's foreshadowing something else, but I'm not sure what yet. I'm wondering why they were ordered to remove the chips, though. Like... who decided that should be done. That entire scene was really sad. :(

5) Thoughts on what we've learned about Cinder's past so far?

She is the Lunar princess, no doubt about it. XD I'm excited to learn more details about that whole thing, but. :)
